The Tax Collector 2020 Movie – Storyline:
David Cuevas is a family man who works as a gangland tax collector for high-ranking Los Angeles gang members. He makes collections across the city with his partner Creeper, ensuring people pay up or will see retaliation. An old threat returns to Los Angeles, putting everything David loves in harm’s way.
Trivia: The film takes place in the same universe as the films “Training Day” and “Harsh Times,” all written by director David Ayer. The Blood gang member character “Bone” (portrayed by Cle Sloan) appeared on Training Day. The film also references the existence of the fictional Latino gang “Hillside Trece,” which was the gang Alonzo Harris had dealings with in Training Day, and the gang is mentioned in Harsh Times as well.
Review of The Tax Collector (2020 Movie):
I wanted to like this even more, but it feels so uneven. There are many things that I do like about this (outside of the over-the-top performance by Shia, that is). But there are things I understand. Work movie thinks – help end. It is set up in a way during the movie but still feels detached from it.
David is a family man who would do anything for his family. David goes nowhere without his right-hand man Creeper. The two have careers one wouldn’t call conventional. He is a local crime lord named ‘The Wizard’ working as a ‘tax collector’ in Los Angeles. The job entails working as the gang’s enforcers, where they travel around the city making collections while forcing clients to pay by any means necessary. Many collections with violent encounters as a display of power are always required.
And Creeper’s boss, by the name of Conejo, resurfaces. Out for revenge to seize and upend the business, this threat is more than just a nuisance and hits close to home, with David forcing him to put up or shut up to preserve the world he created. The movie is quite hellbent on displaying violence. The gruesome things are mostly not shown up close. There is one scene that, well, some would say, is in your face – pun very much intended.
Not sure how much you can connect with the main character (not Shia, he’s the sidekick of sorts). Depending on that will determine how invested you’ll be. Not a bad movie by a long shot, just not as mad and good as I expected it to be.
