Coming 2 America (2021) – Storyline/Plot:
On the 30th anniversary of his wedding to Lisa McDowell, Prince Akeem of Zamunda is summoned before his dying father, King Jaffe Joffer. Jaffe and his shaman Baba reveal to a baffled Akeem that he has sired a son during his first visit to Queens, New York after Semmi had enticed two women into spending the night with them while Akeem was still searching for his future queen. One of them drugged Akeem, resulting in a tryst he did not remember; and since Zamundian tradition demands that only a male successor can inherit the throne, and Lisa has borne only daughters, Akeem is forced to travel back to Queens to retrieve his son or else face a violent takeover by Zamunda’s militaristic neighbour nation Nextdoria, whose dictator, General Izzi, has repeatedly tried to push Akeem into marrying his eldest daughter Meeka to his foppish son, Idi.
Review of Coming 2 America (2021 Film):
Probably the most surprising sequel ever! Like, 33 years later, that’s hilarious in itself. Eddie and Arsenio were great together in pt 1, so I was happy to see both of them back. Plus, I haven’t seen much of Arsenio lately. The premise is great in that Akeem left a little secret behind in America and it’s time to answer that call. So much time passing works well for that premise also. I don’t want to give anything away as it’s not exactly a thick plot. I will say some of it, plot and jokes, were predictable. Sequels always have that uphill battle. But, overall, it did the job and as far as I was concerned, the surprise of it simply showing up after all these years won me over. Don’t overthink it, just enjoy it.
