Fairy Tale (倩女仙缘, 2020) Chinese Fantasy Movie: Adapted from the short story “Nie Xiao Qian” of the novel “Strange Tales of Liao Zhai” by Pu Song Ling.
Review of A Chinese Girl Story (2020) Movie:
It does suffer from the same problems typical of modern Chinese fantasy. There’s too much CG. There’s too much focus on action at the expense of character. It often feels like Chinese fantasy directors would rather be making video games. But if EP suffers from these issues, it suffers from them much less than another recent Chinese fantasy fare.
Meanwhile, the compelling love story is still there, and the action is enjoyable even if overemphasized. Moreover, the imagery is incredible. I’m normally not a fan of modern Chinese fantasy cinema, finding it merely a string of CGI set-pieces with very little to no story to go alongside, and this film has many of the same problems. However, it’s a little more charming than many I’ve seen, with a better grasp of character and some set-piece action that doesn’t disappoint. Some of the ghoulishly macabre creations are well handled too, although a lot of the CGI FX still looks like CGI and nothing else. Kudos for the casting of the excellent Yuen Wah as the good wizard and old-timer Norman Chu as the bad.
Recommended for new fans of Chinese fantasy (adult or child); recommended for fans of the original. It won’t be unforgettable, but it’s an enjoyable watch.
