Call Boy (2018) – Storyline/Plot:
Ryo Morinaka (Tori Matsuzaka) is a university student and works part-time at a bar. He is bored with his daily life and exists in a state of inertia. One day, his friend Shinya Tajima brings the owner of a host bar over to the place where Ryo Morinaka works. Shizuka Mido is the owner of the host bar. Soon, Ryo Morinaka begins to work for Shizuka Mido at the members-only host bar. He feels embarrassed initially, but he fulfills women’s desires and develops a sense of purpose.

Review of Call Boy (2018 Film):
“Call Boy” is a fascinating look at sex and gender roles in a country where sex primarily caters to men. Women, so often overlooked in Japan, are rarely allowed to say their desire aloud, lest they appear to be loose. Sex in the media for women is often traumatic or sees many women share one man. Here, director Daisuke Mimura gives respect and wonder to women of all ages and desires. Ryo, a blank canvass of immature ignorance and apprehension, is our gorgeous, dreamy pair of eyes and our escort through this unexplored part of femininity. Each scene is explicitly laid out, taking time from the first kiss to the final throes, the mess, and the beauty. Each female is autonomous and self-realized, making demands to increase their pleasure at the moment or educate Ryo to be a better lover.
The movie is shocking—Frank depiction sex in a country where fantasy is favored over realism. The film’s roots (a novel from 2001 and a stage play in 2016) are on show throughout. The hazy, dreamlike hues of darkened bedrooms where light slips in just a crack or the stuffy, dim banality of a love hotel in Shinjuku beautifully bounces light off bodies while various fevered jazz and instrumental music riffs in the background. Mimura refuses to turn away from desire, and why should he? His cast gives their all to bring the sexual desires of women legitimacy.
