9½ Weeks (1986) – Storyline/Plot:
An erotic story about a woman, the assistant of an art gallery, who gets involved in an impersonal affair with a man. She barely knows about his life, only about the sex games they play, so the relationship begins to get complicated.
The title of the film refers to the duration of a relationship between Wall Street arbitrageur John Gray and divorced SoHo art gallery employee Elizabeth McGraw in her mid-20s. John initiates and controls the various experimental sexual practices of this volatile relationship to push Elizabeth’s boundaries. In doing so, Elizabeth experiences a gradual downward spiral toward an emotional breakdown.
Elizabeth first sees John in New York City at a Chinese grocer, and later at a street fair where she decides against buying an expensive scarf. John wins her heart when he eventually produces that scarf. They start dating, and Elizabeth is increasingly subjected to John’s behavioral peculiarities; he blindfolds Elizabeth, who is at first reluctant to comply with his sexual demands, but eventually surrenders to them. He gives her an expensive gold watch and instructs her to use it to think about him touching her every day at noon. She takes this imperative even further by masturbating at her workplace at the designated time.
Elizabeth wants to include John in her life and meet her friends, but he makes it clear he only wishes to see her in the evenings and instructs her to see her friends in the daytime. Elizabeth’s confusion about John increases when he leaves her alone at his apartment. She examines his closet until she discovers a photograph of him with another woman, April Cover. John asks her if she went through his things, declaring that he will punish her. She attacks him. He then sexually assaults her.

Review of 9½ Weeks (1986 Film):
This memorable sexual drama is an adaptation of a novel by Elizabeth McNeill. Kim Basinger stars as a character named Elizabeth, a divorced art gallery worker. One day, she chances to meet John (Mickey Rourke), a charming young Wall Street financier. She finds out that he likes to play sexual games, and realizes that she’s vulnerable to his manipulations. Ultimately, she finds this strange relationship taking dominance in her life.
“Nine 1/2 Weeks” is a large two-character film that is not degrading or “pornographic” as some people might have you believe. It’s actually rather restrained, and even in its full-length uncut version is never overly concerned with nudity or depravity. This may come as a disappointment to some potential viewers, but most of the time it’s concentrating on detailing the evolution of this sex-based relationship.
Unfortunately, we never get to know our two principals all that well. But since she has more to work with, Basinger definitely comes off better. Rourkes’ character forever remains an enigma. Also, for a film running close to two hours, it doesn’t seem to have all that much story going for it.
The sex scenes will stick in the mind, even if most of them aren’t particularly imaginative. The exception is the notorious “food” sequence, which was later parodied in “Hot Shots!”. But the choice of song in the sequence kind of kills the mood.
